Move-In Checklist from Raymus Homes

Move-In Checklist

We care about your moving experience and want it to be as pleasant as possible. This list will assist you in making the transition to your new Raymus home.

Eight weeks prior to the move:

  • Inventory everything in your home
  • Dispose of or sell off all superfluous items in closets and the garage. Hey, a garage sale is a good thing! Plus it brings you a little cash for moving supplies. (If you aren’t sure about an item, put it out of sight. If you don’t use it in a month; you probably can live without it!)
  • Coordinate the move through your insurance company. They’ll need to know what you’re up to in case things are broken or stolen during the move. They will also need to provide you with a new policy prior to your closing on your new home.
  • Get moving estimates from moving companies.
  • If you’re moving a home office, remember that this part of your move may be a tax deduction.
  • Notify your school district about the move so records will be transferred.
  • Collect boxes, newspapers, plastic bags, and other moving supplies.

Six weeks prior to the move:

  • Complete all necessary address changes for banking, the department of motor vehicles, voter registration, friends and relatives, doctors and schools. Keep in mind any companies or schools you have applied to, will need to be notified.
  • Choose your mover
  • Verify and coordinate your closing with your Sales representative.

One month prior to the move:

  • Submit change of address forms to the United States Postal Service.
  • Start packing! REALLY!
  • Gather your crucial documents together including bills, medical information, insurance, passports, vehicle registration, etc.
  • Request refunds of all outstanding deposits held by utility companies.
  • Schedule your closing with your builder and clear all conditions to your loan approval.
  • Give landlord notice in writing, if necessary.

Two weeks before the move:

  • Arrange for changeover/disconnection of utilities.
  • Coordinate with newspaper companies to cancel old deliveries and start up a new subscription.
  • Fill and transfer prescriptions
  • Find out about your new state’s driver and auto licensing procedures, if applicable.
  • Keep packing!

One week prior to move:

  • Pack your moving kit, those items you need to get by on during the first few days in your new home. Paper plates, cups, and utensils, along with toilet paper, shampoo and soap. Also include basic foods like cereal, coffee, and milk. Those items will also include everything you need to open your boxes, such as scissors and box cutters.
  • Contact the phone company, the gas company, and all other utility companies to set up service at your new address.
  • Arrange for final readings for all utilities 1-2 days after closings.
  • Plan out your kitchen and furniture layouts for the new home.
  • Pack yard and shed items…don’t forget to drain fuel and oil from lawnmowers and power equipment and dispose of all other flammable items.
  • Drain water from garden hoses.

Moving Day:

  • Help the movers locate proper connections for the washing machine, refrigerator, and other large appliances.
  • Set up kitchen and bedrooms FIRST!
  • Turn on utilities at your new home!
  • Keep copies of your bills from the movers well after the move to make sure everything is in order.
  • Thoroughly check your inventory.
  • Never pack jewelry, home records, computer records, and sensitive computer equipment with the moving van!
  • Contact your new municipality to arrange for pet licenses and general ordinances.
  • Visit your new post office to ensure that your mail forward is operational.
  • Take movers for a last-minute walk-through and identify items that require special handling.
  • Double-check to make sure windows are closed, closets are empty, lights are out, and doors are locked.
  • Leave keys and garage door openers for new owners or tenants.
  • Supervise the placement of boxes and furniture at your new home.
  • Make sure utilities and phones are working at your new home.
  • Let family and friends know you’ve arrived safely.
  • Begin unpacking necessities.
